Michelle Anslow, founder and designer at Susy Harper, since 1999 and named after Mum.

'I’m very much a hand’s on designer who let’s the structure and feel of cloth lead the way. Drawn by nature, I love the ever differing textures of natural cloths, such as the rough earthiness of Scottish tweeds or the wonderful soft scrunch of Irish linens. The individuality of hand loomed Khadi cottons from India, or the very many beautiful ways of silk.  And then as a good cloth wears, I love the fragility and the patinas of the worn and the washed and the lived in.

When making my patterns I think of how we want our clothes to make us feel and how they can be versatile and functional as well as feminine and lovely. I want to make clothes you want to live in.'

Why Susy Harper?

Because Susy Harper was my mum's maiden name and ever since I was a child who couldn't resist the urge to cut up her wedding dress for the sake of creation, I knew she had style, and I always loved that name. It rings 1960’s to me, and I'm definitely inspired by that time and my Mum's own style within it. Here she is, Susy Harper, standing in white, on a Sunday School trip to the Alps, with the Matterhorn in the background. Circa 1960.
